House of Courts
Chennai, India
2024
House of Courts was designed for a doctor and his family, thoughtfully shaped around a central tree the client had planted with his son years ago — a living memory that became the heart of the home. Instead of a singular large courtyard, the design introduces a series of smaller courts or pockets, allowing each space to connect with nature and enabling an immersive indoor-outdoor experience throughout the house.

The home is organized into three distinct zones. At the entrance are the public spaces, including a library that doubles as a welcoming area for the client’s professional visitors. The central core houses the semi-private living spaces, anchored by a skylit atrium and lush landscaping. To the far right lies the more private domain — the kitchen and family bedrooms — offering comfort and retreat.

This G+1 structure is crafted with a focus on natural materials and passive design strategies. Oriented southwards and facing the street, the formal living room features a double-skin brick façade that balances light, privacy, and thermal comfort. A planter box seamlessly bridges the gap between the façade layers, softening the built edge and enhancing the home’s connection to its landscape.
